New beds that survive their first summer

Most new beds die in July, not April. The difference is what happened underground three months earlier.
Prep beats plants
We dig in compost to a full spade depth, not a sprinkle on top. Roots follow the good soil down, which is what gets a bed through its first heat wave without daily watering.
Right plant, honest light
A shade bed planned for shade beats a sun bed forced into it. We map the light before we suggest a single plant.
